UFC Fight Night Volkov vs. Overeem Takeaways

UFC Fight Night Takeaways: Volkov vs. Overeem Danilo Marques Submits Mike Rodriguez  Early on in the first round of this bout, Marques would secure a single-leg takedown. Rodriguez got to the fence and would stand. Marques went for another single leg and got it. Rodriguez would stand again and quickly be taken down again with an outside trip. Rodriguez would stand towards the end of the round and land a nice right elbow in the clinch. In the second, Marques would secure a single leg and run the pipe to finish before passing to side control. Marques took mount when Rodriguez retreated to the fence to stand. Rodriguez exposed his back to stand and Marques used the opportunity to put his hooks in and break him down. Once Rodriguez was broken down to the mat, Marques body triangled and attacked the choke. Marques tried to finish the choke with the hand on the head. He would switch to a gable grip and strangle Rodriguez unconscious. I was impressed with Marques' positionally sound BJJ a

UFC 257 Breakdown: Joanne Calderwood vs. Jessica Eye Preview

Joanne Calderwood vs. Jessica Eye

Jessica Eye and Joanne Calderwood are set to meet tonight as the third fight on the main card of UFC 257. This fight really helps round out the card, as it is pretty top-heavy in my opinion. Joanne Calderwood doesn't know how to have a boring fight and has an exciting style to watch with excellent Muay Thai skills. Jessica Eye is a tough, scrappy fighter who primarily relies on her boxing. Calderwood is a former Muay Thai champion and neither fighter is particularly known for their offensive grappling skills, so this is likely to be a stand-and-bang affair. Add in a little bit of beef between the two, and this fight is likely to be very fan-friendly.

Prediction

I have Joanne Calderwood in this one. I'm pretty sure the odds are sitting somewhere in the neighborhood of a pick 'em fight, and will likely close around there as well. I give Calderwood the edge because she has a much more diverse skill set and a hugely advantageous background in striking. As I said at the beginning of this article, Joanne Calderwood was a Muay Thai Champion, holding the WBC UK bantamweight championship belt during her career. I believe she will land early being the faster fighter and authoritatively counter Eye's left hook with her own. I think Calderwood has all of the tools to shut down Eye's punches, even if she doesn't find success doing it in punching range. Being a former Muay Thai champion, Joanne has all the tools she needs to shut down punches; she will likely be able to utilize her elbows, clinch game, and knees at close range. Since this is a closed stance match-up, I see Joanne's inside leg kick being a determining factor in this fight as it will disrupt Eye's balance when she tries to sit down on her shots.

Takeaway

I've got Joanne here. I'm a big fan, but objectively her skill set is likely to make her the victor in this bout. I'm predicting a 30-27 score unanimous decision victory for Joanne Calderwood. I think the clearest path to victory for Calderwood in this fight is through a kick and clinch heavy game plan, as Jessica Eyes's best weapons are her hands, and those things would shut them down effectively. Another factor stacked against Eye is her reliance on her left hook. Unfortunately for Eye, her opponent has a very fast and accurate left hook; as they say, don't hook with a hooker. Eye does have the size and strength advantage in this fight, being a former bantamweight. I could see eye winning if she presses Joanne up against the fence and makes this ugly because of the size differential, but technically I don't see this fight as close. This fight is likely to be very fan-friendly and exciting to watch unfold and is sure to have some wild and technical striking exchanges. This one is very much worth tuning in for.
