UFC Fight Night Volkov vs. Overeem Takeaways

UFC Fight Night Takeaways: Volkov vs. Overeem Danilo Marques Submits Mike Rodriguez  Early on in the first round of this bout, Marques would secure a single-leg takedown. Rodriguez got to the fence and would stand. Marques went for another single leg and got it. Rodriguez would stand again and quickly be taken down again with an outside trip. Rodriguez would stand towards the end of the round and land a nice right elbow in the clinch. In the second, Marques would secure a single leg and run the pipe to finish before passing to side control. Marques took mount when Rodriguez retreated to the fence to stand. Rodriguez exposed his back to stand and Marques used the opportunity to put his hooks in and break him down. Once Rodriguez was broken down to the mat, Marques body triangled and attacked the choke. Marques tried to finish the choke with the hand on the head. He would switch to a gable grip and strangle Rodriguez unconscious. I was impressed with Marques' positionally sound BJJ a

Michael Chandler UFC Performance Review: Justin Gaethje Next?

Chandler Introduces Himself to UFC Fans With a Bang Former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler made a huge statement when he knocked out Dan Hooker in the first round . Chandler crossing over to the UFC has been a dream of many hardcore MMA fans for a long time. Many questions surrounded the potential crossover for years and many fans were skeptical of Chandler's ability to handle UFC lightweights. It's safe to say he erased any doubt in the minds of the fans that he could handle the top of the UFC's lightweight division in his last fight. Dan Hooker is one of the best strikers in the UFC and on paper this was a really tough fight for Chandler matchup-wise. Beating Hooker spoke volumes about how dangerous Chandler is and his future in the organization as well.  Chandler Passed a Huge Test With Hooker  On paper Dan Hooker was about as bad of a matchup as there could be for Michael Chandler. Hooker is a very tall and large lightweight, abnormally so at that. In a

Shamil Musaev vs. Uros Jurisic: KSW 58 Preview

Shamil Musaev Meets Uros Jurisic at KSW 58 Former Ultimate Fighter cast member and undefeated professional, Uros Jurisic is set to face absolute monster and fellow undefeated pro, Shamil Musaev at KSW 58. While I usually write about the UFC, I watch many different promotions and KSW is consistently one of the most interesting. This fight is the third fight from the main event of KSW 58 and will take place at welterweight. Musaev vs. Jurisic is an exciting matchup on paper and is virtually guaranteed to an action-packed battle between two technical fighters. Both fighters in this bout are undefeated, well-rounded, and aggressive seekers of a finish. This is also an exciting one because both fighters are very promising prospects that are likely to be successful in other organizations.  Uros Jurisic at a Glance Uros Jurisic 11-0 is an aggressive fighter by natural disposition and will seek the finish aggressively. Jurisic likes to move forward throwing heavy hands to punch his way into th

What's Next for Conor McGregor? 4 Potential Matchups

What's Next for Conor McGregor? When Conor McGregor wins, so does MMA. McGregor's ability to draw a large audience exceeds any other fighter in the history of the sport. When Conor fights, the eyes of many casual observers are drawn in to take a glance at the sport. When he wins, this glance becomes a gaze, and everybody involved is better for it. Conor's success is the proverbial rising tide that lifts all boats. Well, one would have to have an interesting standard of success to see McGregor's performance last night as a successful one. So what does Dana White's cash cow getting slaughtered by a supercharged Dustin Poirier before making it out to pasture mean for the sport?  Not The End of The World While Conor McGregor is by far the biggest draw in the history of the sport, his losing last night isn't going to make it go extinct. The sport itself is amazing and will continue to be with or without him. Martial arts are all a means of physically expressing on

UFC 257 Takeaways: Conor McGregor vs Rafael Dos Anjos Next?

UFC 257 Delivers in Stunning Fashion Last night's Fight Island 8 main card shocked fans of sanctioned violence all around the world. Four of the five fights on the main card ended by knockout. Marina Rodriguez scored a huge knockout win over -350 favorite Amanda Ribas in the second round. The next fight would see Makhmud Muradov extend his winning streak to fourteen with a third-round stoppage victory over Andrew Sanchez. Joanne Calderwood would defeat Jessica Eye by decision,  as I predicted in my preview  article. Michael Chandler shocked UFC fans around the world when he upset Dan Hooker by way of stunning knockout in the first round. By far, the most shocking moment of the night came when Dustin Poirer shocked the world and avenged his loss to Conor McGregor. Poirer did so by way of second-round knockout.  Marina Rodriguez Upsets Amanda Ribas  Marina Rodriguez earned a performance of the night bonus for her KO upset of Amanda Ribas. In the first round of the bout, Ribas was

UFC 257 Breakdown: Joanne Calderwood vs. Jessica Eye Preview

Joanne Calderwood vs. Jessica Eye Jessica Eye and Joanne Calderwood are set to meet tonight as the third fight on the main card of UFC 257. This fight really helps round out the card, as it is pretty top-heavy in my opinion. Joanne Calderwood doesn't know how to have a boring fight and has an exciting style to watch with excellent Muay Thai skills. Jessica Eye is a tough, scrappy fighter who primarily relies on her boxing. Calderwood is a former Muay Thai champion and neither fighter is particularly known for their offensive grappling skills, so this is likely to be a stand-and-bang affair. Add in a little bit of beef between the two, and this fight is likely to be very fan-friendly.  Prediction  I have Joanne Calderwood in this one. I'm pretty sure the odds are sitting somewhere in the neighborhood of a pick 'em fight, and will likely close around there as well. I give Calderwood the edge because she has a much more diverse skill set and a hugely advantageous background

Michael Chiesa beats Neil Magny at Fight Island 7. Colby Covington Next?

Fight Island 7 Main Event Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny met this past weekend for UFC Fight Island 7. This fight was a late replacement for the highly anticipated bout between Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev and had a lot to live up to because of that. Chiesa would end up taking the bout by decision after a hard-fought five rounds by both fighters. The fight itself saw Chiesa force the action spending basically the entire fight setting up takedowns, attempting to finish takedowns, and passing guard. Magny defended very well on the ground and was never in submission danger. He attempted a couple of takedowns finishing one, but Chiesa turned his back and popped right up. The other two takedown attempts from Neil Magny caused scrambles that ended with his opponent on top. First Round  Once he closed the distance between him and his opponent, Chiesa would enter an over-under tie-up with Magny and connect his hands. Chiesa would then step his knee in between Magny's legs, change direc
